The Children's Magic Mural is the culmination of two
years work involving primary and secondary school
students from six Southwark schools. Each student has
designed and painted a self-portrait textile and
collaborated on the final presentation, a hanging
mural and a celebration of the multicultural heritage,
artistry and craftsmanship of the children. It's the
first community outreach project of Bermondsey Street's
Fashion and Textile Museum, and this week's exhibition
is an opportunity to see inside the doors of the
distinctive pink and orange building before the museum
opens in Spring 2003.

Street the remains of the women's operating theatre
of old St Thomas¹ Hospital. For nearly a century it had
remained hidden and forgotten. Built in 1822, the
theatre is the oldest surviving example of a 19th
century operating room in Europe. In 1962, the restored
theatre was opened to the public as a museum. A lecture
celebrating the anniversary of one of SE1's best kept
secrets.
