CELEBRATE SHAKESPEARE'S BIRTHDAY WITH SONNET WALKS
Saturday 26 April
Walks set off from both venues every 15 minutes between
10am and 12.45pm; 15, (conc 12); includes entry to
Shakespeare's Globe Exhibition; bookings 020 7401 9919
The Globe will make London its stage as actors draw the
public through the capital on an unusual Shakespearean
treasure hunt called Sweet Love Remember'd. Walkers can
choose from two routes which converge at the groundling
gates of Shakespeare's Globe. The first route starts at
Westminster Abbey and takes in such sights as Middle
Temple Hall and St Paul's Cathedral, while the second
route begins in St Leonard's Churchyard, Shoreditch,
and will pass the site of Shakespeare's first theatre,
Monument and Southwark Cathedral. At the starting
point, walkers are given a red rose and directions for
their chosen route. This year Artistic Director Mark
Rylance will start groups off on the Shoreditch walk.
Along the way, a map and background notes will draw
attention to sites of architectural and historical
interest, while twelve actors in disguise emerge
without warning from the crowds to entertain walkers
with surprise recitals of Shakespeare's sonnets. The
actor sonneteers have been so convincing in the past
that one year, when one leaned over Blackfriars Bridge
and bemoaned his lost love, the police were called to
prevent what they thought was a suicide attempt!
