NORTH LAMBETH PARISH FETE IN LAMBETH PALACE GARDENS
Saturday 26 June
2pm-5pm at Lambeth Palace Gardens (entry via garden
gate, facing the river); £3
Map: http://quicklink.se1direct.co.uk/?id=758
For nearly 60 years a garden party or fete has taken
place in the gardens of Lambeth Palace on the last
Saturday in June. It all began when Archbishop Temple
thought that local people needed cheering up in the
post-war years and he asked the people of St Mary's
Lambeth to organise a summer party in his back garden.
Stroll through the lovely gardens, listen to the
Southwark Wind Band and the Archbishop Sumner School
Steel Band, browse at the book stall, try your hand on
the sideshows and have your face painted, visit the
home produce, plants, china and glass, bric-a-brac and
other stalls... Enjoy hot dogs, ice cream and spicy hot
food or a cup of tea and a cake from the tea tent.

Blackfriars Settlement is teaming up with the BBC to
support their People's War initiative, and will be
holding an open day and exhibition of wartime
memorabilia at Bermondsey Village Hall on Sunday.
The People's War aims to encourage people who lived
through the war years to write about their memories of
the period so that they can be collected on a special
BBC website and preserved for future generations.
Blackfriars Settlement, which manages the Pool of
London UK Online Project, already offers free classes
and computer access in the area and will be providing
help and computer advice for people who would like to
add their own stories to the BBC's rapidly growing
collection.
The open day will include an exhibition of wartime
memorabilia, posters and vintage newspapers together
music from the period, together with access to the
People's War website. There will also be a chance to
win tickets to the Britain at War Experience and
Bletchley Park Museum, both of whom have helped with
preparations for the event.
