THIRD MONDAY: HISTORY READING GROUP IN WATERLOO
Monday 20 September

Lower Marsh's Waterloo Library hosts a history reading
group on the third Monday of every month. "Bring a
sandwich" is the invitation for participants, with
events running from 1.05pm to 2pm. Dates to remember
are 20 September, 18 October, 15 November and 20
December. The group will cover an eclectic range of
books, including the social history "Once in a house on
fire" by Andrea Ashworth and the famously
groundbreaking "Orientalism" by Edward Said. These
sessions will be led by Anna Robinson, the local
history librarian based at Lambeth Archives. For

AN ENCHANTED EVENING IN ST GEORGE'S GARDEN
Friday 24 September
3.30-6.30pm in St George's Garden, Tabard Street; free

An outdoor garden event for families to enjoy exploring
a hidden world of local history inspired by the ancient
graveyard  and Dickensian prison wall. Children  can
hear stories from our past, create a  Victorian hat,
mash up medicines and  potions from local herbs, plant
a flower  to take home and make drumming tunes. Adults
can relax, talk to experts about the  rich history,
contribute to future plans,  eat delicious curry, and
listen to music.  At 4pm Charles Dickens' great great
grandson Ian unveils celebratory artworks.  A Bankside
Open Spaces Trust event.

A crucial part of the London Design Festival, DD04
comes to LABAN in Deptford for three days only. The
festival follows the theme of Re-Use. Local design
companies will be taking industrial rubbish bins and
turning them into things of beauty and wonder and
placing them in the Stirling Prize-winning LABAN. There
will be a series of talks, workshops and events.

Mark Rylance has announced that he is to step down as

Following this summer's planning inquiry into the
future of the barge-dwelling community at Downings
Roads moorings, the inspector has returned his verdict,
quashing the eviction notices and granting planning

on Bankside until 2am on Sunday morning. Seven hours
later the fired vessels were retrieved.
