CYBER-REALISM: HOW STORYTELLING IS CHANGING IN THE
CYBERNETIC AGE: FREE TALK AT SHORTWAVE

Local resident James Harkin argues that new and
sophisticated kinds of stories which engage our restless
cybernetic sensibilities can be found under our noses in
mainstream contemporary cinema and television.

THE BUNTING PROJECT
Tuesday 30 June
10am-5pm  at Waterloo Action Centre, 14 Baylis Road
Southbank Centre and the Young Vic are coming together for
the first time to work on a new open-air performance of
Coleridge's poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. The
performance on Saturday 4 July will take place in Southbank
Centre Square (outside the Royal Festival Hall) which will
be dressed to look like a giant wedding feast. 500 metres of
bunting are needed to decorate the square - come along to
the Waterloo Action Centre and help with this task. Register
your attendance with Kirstin at the Young Vic on 020 7922
2861. Lunch, tea and coffee will be provided. Drop in for an
hour or two or stay for the whole day. No sewing skills
required - there are a variety of tasks.

VINOPOLIS 10TH BIRTHDAY BALLOON RELEASE
Tuesday 30 June
11am at Vinopolis, 1 Bank End; free
1,000 Vinopolis balloons will be released from Bank End by
Oz Clarke, Rupert Ellwood and Tom Forrest to celebrate the
first decade of the wine attraction. Each balloon will have
a voucher attached which can be redeemed for 2 Vinopolis
Grapevine tickets during July and August.

With a focus on health and its direct relationship with the

TATE LOCAL: NEIGHBOURHOOD DAY - VISIT THE OIL TANKS
Sunday 5 July
10am-6pm  at Tate Modern,  Bankside; free
Tate Modern hosts a day of fun, free activities for all
residents of Southwark & Lambeth. 
Local residents are invited to experience a rare viewing of
the stunning former oil tanks under the Turbine Hall. These
dramatic raw spaces will be at the heart of the new
extension. There will also be a chance to catch a glimpse of
a one-off performance involving a group of local residents
which has been devised by the Cholmondeleys, one of the
foremost contemporary dance companies in Britain. A range of
drop-in workshops will keep local families with kids of all
ages entertained. All events are free and drop-in, apart
from the oil tank site visits which must be booked in

THE WEDDING OR THE RIME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER
Saturday 4 July
12 noon & 3pm at Southbank Centre Square,  Belvedere Road;

Samuel Taylor Coleridge's classic poem comes to life in a
major new outdoor production with original music by
Southbank Centre artists-in-residence Bellowhead and a cast
featuring 150 children from Lambeth and Southwark primary
schools. This unique production is staged as a wedding, with
the audience as invited guests. With traditional fare,
including oysters, a hog roast, cake and ale served at long
trestle tables, Southbank Centre Square is transformed by
sight, sound and smell to tell this legendary tale. Part of
the London Literature Festival.

THE BIG SMOKE: ARCHIVE LONDON FILM FROM THE BFI

'The Big Smoke' explores the forgotten face of the capital
with a tantalising tour through half a century of life in
London. Highlights of the programme include: Blackfriars
Bridge (1896), an extraordinary glimpse of Victorians
travelling to work by horse-drawn tram and on foot at an
enviably elegant pace. Sci-fi short The Fugitive Futurist
(1924) sees an oddball inventor startle Londoners with a
glimpse of their great city's future. Scenes at Piccadilly
Circus and Hyde Park Corner Underground Stations (1931)
offers an ethereal insight into the change and continuity of
tube life.
