Wednesday 2 January
LIFEBOAT SALUTE
Tower Bridge will lift on Wednesday at 10.15am to
salute the three new RNLI lifeboats to be introduced on
the Thames in London, one of which will be based at
Tower Pier in the Pool of London. This will be one of
the last time the bridge will be raised before its
refurbishment in Spring 2002. Since September,
Coastguards and the RNLI have been conducting extensive
training programmes throughout the area that finish
this month with an exercise involving a wide range of
search and rescue scenarios. Watch some of the action
on the Livesights ThamesCam at
http://www.livesights.com and read about the background
at

Wednesday 2 January
MINI CHRISTMAS TREE
Tower Bridge lifts at 12 noon
If you've visited Hay's Galleria or London Bridge City
recently you may have noticed a rather strange
structure mounted on a barge moored outside Custom
House on the north bank. Well, it's a Christmas tree
made from 12 fibreglass replicas of modern Minis, and
it leaves the Pool of London on Wednesday. Watch it
live on the ThamesCam http://www.livesights.com

Saturday 5 January
AFRO-CUBAN LIGHT FESTIVALS
National Theatre; 1pm--7.15pm
Chill out with the palm-wine sounds of Grass Roots
(1pm) and encounter the infectious raw jazzy Kwela
flavours of Positively Testcard (6pm). Soak up the vibe
with music and art workshops, stories and stalls and a
final chance to explore the exhibition of lanterns.
10.15pm--11.45pm: Chase the January blues away with the
sunny sounds and carnival spirit of Kiko Cowan's
Expresion Cubana. A big band jazz and salsa party
finale.
