FELTMAKERS IN SOUTHWARK
Tuesday 26 November
7.30pm at Hawkstone Hall, Kennington Road; �1

Rosemary Weinstein delivers the Southwark & Lambeth
Archaeological Society Presidential Lecture. Preceded
by AGM at 7.15pm.


CHILDREN'S MAGIC MURAL AT FASHION & TEXTILE MSEUM
Wednesday 27 to Saturday 30 November
12 noon-6pm at the Fashion and Textile Museum, 83
Bermondsey Street; free 
The Children's Magic Mural is the culmination of two
years work involving primary and secondary school
students from six Southwark schools. Each student has
designed and painted a self-portrait textile and
collaborated on the final presentation, a  hanging
mural and a celebration of the multicultural heritage,
artistry and craftsmanship of the children. It's the
first community outreach project of Bermondsey Street's
Fashion and Textile Museum, and this week's exhibition
is an opportunity to see inside the doors of the
distinctive pink and orange building before the museum
opens in Spring 2003.

CHRISTMAS WASSAIL AT THE NEW ARCH THEATRE
Wednesday 27, Thursday 28 & Friday 29 November
7.30pm at the New Arch Theatre, under Waterloo Station;
�7 (conc �5 for UB40, senior citizens and
Southwark/Lambeth residents)
Get into training for Christmas. Local music theatre
group Geoids present their Christmas Wassail of songs
and readings. Evening includes mince pies and

CHRISTMAS SHOPPING AT OXO TOWER AND GABRIEL'S WHARF
Friday 29, Saturday 30 November & Sunday 1 December
12 noon-4pm at Oxo Tower Wharf and Gabriel's Wharf
Mulled wine and hot roasted chestnuts will be served to
visitors to Gabriel's Wharf and Oxo Tower Wharf (free
with an invitation - available at any of the design
shops). At Oxo Tower Wharf there will be free tastings
of goodies at EAT Cafe too. There will also be
performances by the New Testament Church of God Gospel
Choir at Gabriel's Wharf on Saturday and Sunday between
2pm and 4pm.

present an evening of experimental films from Montreal.

FOR COMPASSION, NOT GAIN: A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE OLD
OPERATING THEATRE
Sunday 1 December, 
2.30pm at the Old Operating Theatre, 9a St Thomas�

In 1956 a discovery was made in the attic of the 18th
century Church of St Thomas the Apostle in St Thomas�
Street � the remains of the women's operating theatre
of old St Thomas� Hospital. For nearly a century it had
remained hidden and forgotten. Built in 1822, the
theatre is the oldest surviving example of a 19th
century operating room in Europe. In 1962, the restored
theatre was opened to the public as a museum. A lecture
celebrating the anniversary of one of SE1's best kept
secrets.
