MINT STREET PARK SPORTS DAY 
Wednesday 13 August
12noon-4pm at Mint Street Park, Southwark Bridge Road
Parachute games, martial arts demonstrations, five a
side football, facepainting, throw the wellie, catch
the duckie, throw the rubbish in the bin, lots of tasty
food to picnic in the park. Meet the police, fire
service, St Mungo's, London Wildlife Trust, Bankside
Street Action Team, and other groups working for a
cleaner and safer local area. 
Workers' Egg and spoon obstacle relay race 12.30pm,
Parent and child  Wheelbarrow race at 2pm. 
Children - under 7 or over 7, use up your energy! Sack

SOUTHWARK GOES ONLINE IN FIGHT AGAINST GUNS
Wednesday 13 August
7pm-9pm at http://www.southwark.gov.uk
Gun crime and young people will be the subject of the
first ever discussion forum event on Southwark
Council's  revamped website this Wednesday.
As part of the relaunch the site will host regular
discussion forum events where experts and councillors
answer queries, in real time and online, on key issues.
The first event - on gun crime - brings together Lucy 
Cope, who set up the Mothers Against Guns campaign
group after her son, Damian, was shot last year and
Mark Smith, who was a victim of gun crime and who now
campaigns against guns in the community. They are
joined by Southwark Council Leader Nick Stanton and
Southwark Borough Police Commander Ian Thomas.


FIRST WORLD WAR POETS 
Thursday 14 August
6.45pm at the Calder Bookshop, 51 The Cut
The First World War produced a wealth of great poetry -
much of it written in the trenches, and often by poets
who would never make it home, such as Rupert Brooke and
Wilfred Owen. Two actors will read poems from the   and
John Calder will talk about the poets themselves. A
discussion will follow.

This month the Royal Shakespeare Company will be giving
a special preview of their Stratford production of

WHEEL STOPS TURNING AS TEMPERATURE SOARS IN SE1 
The London Eye was stopped as temperatures rose last
week. With 37 degrees centigrade being recorded on the
riverside at County Hall, officials were concerned
about temperatures inside the pods.
