On Tuesday theey are hosting an open meeting to get more opinions from local residents. http://www.elephantlinks.co.uk/BeormundCentre LIVING STREETS SOUTHWARK GROUP LAUNCH Wednesday 23 June 7pm at Charles Dickens School, Lant Street Map: http://quicklink.se1direct.co.uk/?id=696 A new Living Streets branch is to be launched in Southwark on Wednesday. Simon Hughes MP will be the main speaker. The branch aims to create safe, vibrant, healthy streets for all in Southwark. NORTH LAMBETH PARISH FETE IN LAMBETH PALACE GARDENS Saturday 26 June 2pm-5pm at Lambeth Palace Gardens (entry via garden gate, facing the river); �3 Map: http://quicklink.se1direct.co.uk/?id=758 For nearly 60 years a garden party or fete has taken place in the gardens of Lambeth Palace on the last Saturday in June. It all began when Archbishop Temple thought that local people needed cheering up in the post-war years and he asked the people of St Mary's Lambeth to organise a summer party in his back garden. Stroll through the lovely gardens, listen to the Southwark Wind Band and the Archbishop Sumner School Steel Band, browse at the book stall, try your hand on the sideshows and have your face painted, visit the home produce, plants, china and glass, bric-a-brac and other stalls... Enjoy hot dogs, ice cream and spicy hot food or a cup of tea and a cake from the tea tent. http://www.archbishopofcanterbury.org OLYMPIC TORCH RELAY Saturday 26 June The Olympic torch will cross Tower Bridge and arrive in Southwark at approximately 3.55pm. There will be a special event at City Hall arranged by the Greater London Authority and More London. The bells of Southwark Cathedral will be rung as the relay passes by. A carnival percussion workshop will be held from 3.45pm on Bankside west of the Millennium Bridge. The torch relay is expected to arrive at the bridge at approx 4.15pm. The Millennium Bridge will be decorated with balloon arches and more than 100 children will line the bridge to welcome the flame and celebrity torchbearer. The Millennium Bridge will be closed to the public for a short time prior to the arrival of the Torch Relay. The Lord Mayor of London will greet the relay on the north bank. There will be a further opportunity to see the Olympic Torch from the South Bank at approximately 6.40pm when the Flame is transferred at Embankment Pier to the boat of the British Sydney Olympics coxed 8 rowing team for transportation on the Thames to Westminster Pier. http://www.london.gov.uk/torchrelay/ http://www.torch2004.com BBC PEOPLE'S WAR PROJECT & EXHIBITION IN BERMONDSEY Sunday 27 June 11am at Bermondsey Village Hall, Kirby Grove Map: http://quicklink.se1direct.co.uk/?id=733 Blackfriars Settlement�is teaming up with the BBC to support their People's War initiative, and will be holding an open day and exhibition of wartime memorabilia at Bermondsey Village Hall on Sunday. The People's War aims to encourage people who lived through the war years to write about their memories of the period so that they can be collected on a special BBC website and preserved for future generations.� Blackfriars Settlement, which manages the Pool of London UK Online Project, already offers free classes and computer access in the area and will be providing help and computer advice for people who would like to add their own stories to the BBC's rapidly growing collection. The open day will include an exhibition of wartime memorabilia, posters and vintage newspapers together music from the period, together with access to the People's War website.
