The South Bank turns Turkish for the weekend with
music line up combining the best of traditional and
contemporary musicians from Turkey and the UK plus a
riverside bazaar selling the best of Turkish cuisine
and crafts. For the first time in London for Turkish
Fest is the Ottoman mehter march. For centuries this
music accompanied the marching Ottoman army into
battle, its uplifting beat instilling the soldiers with
strength and courage. Today this music featuring drum
and zurna - an oboe-like woodwind instrument is part
of Turkish folk culture.
The Children's Garden features a bouncy castle, candy
floss, mini play area, Henna Tattoos and face painting.
Over the two days there will be a number of fashion
shows highlighting the latest designs - from Turkish
leather from Karia to independently designed jackets
and ladies wear. A collection of paintings and other
artworks are shown and for sale by artists including
Fadime Yildirim, Nevin Borazan and Dogan Ors.
The South Bank riverside walkway is transformed into a
Turkish Bazaar with stalls serving the best of Turkish
food, drink, spices, music and crafts. The festival
bazaar includes famous Turkish dishes, cheese and
olives, fruits and nuts, alongside traditional items
like carpets, rugs, hand painted plates and more.
