BENJAMIN BRITTEN'S CURLEW RIVER AT SOUTHWARK CATHEDRAL Tuesday 22 August Curlew River is the first of Britten's church parables. Based on the Japanese Noh play, Sumidagawa, and transformed into a mystery play, it tells the haunting yet moving story of a mother's search for her lost son across the Medival Fenlands East Anglia. It will be the only London performance in a tour of four medieval churches by Mahogany Opera who specialise in performing in unique venues appropriate for each production. The artistic director is Frederic Wake Walker. Curlew River was first heard at Orford in 1964 but had its London premiere at Southwark Cathedral, a church favoured by Britten.
