RECYCLE YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE During January Southwark Council, in partnership with Veolia Environmental Services, will be picking up real Christmas trees for recycling alongside your garden waste collections. The trees will be collected on your normal garden waste collection day, please remember to remove the pot and all the tree's decorations first. If you don't have a garden waste service, your tree can be taken to Belair, Burgess, Peckham Rye or Southwark parks or Manor Place Household Waste Reuse and Recycling Centre from January 5 to 31. If you are disabled, elderly or unable to take your Christmas tree to one of the collection points then you can arrange to have your Christmas tree collected until January 29. Since the building of the first bridge across the Thames, the spiritual care of all those who have used it has fallen to the parish churches located at either end. In a ceremony that draws on traditions throughout Europe, prayers are offered for all those who use the river for work or leisure. This Thames tradition follows the Orthodox custom of hurling a cross into water as a symbol of Christ's birth and baptism which is celebrated on the Sunday after the Epiphany. All are invited to join the congregations for this occasion.
