AN EVENING WITH ROSIE FURBER AND JILL MCGIVERING

In conversation with writer Rosemary Furber, Jill will be
talking about her first novel The Last Kestrel, set in
Southern Afghanistan. It�s a fast-paced and deeply moving
book about British and Afghan lives caught up in the horrors
of war. It was inspired by Jill�s experiences with British
troops in Afghanistan where she met some remarkable Afghan
women. This will be followed by a Q&A and book signing

LONDON BRIDGE GHOSTS AND MAGIC WALK

Meet at the southern end of London Bridge SE1, by the spike,
for a riverside and Borough back-street tour of Southwark's
ghostly and magical past and folklore. Hear legends of
London Bridge; see the sites of the wizard's garrets, sacred
shrines, husband abuse from beyond the grave, haunted
hoof-beats and the sad, scary and silly ghosts of Bankside.
This walk is about an hour and also covers haunted pubs,
Cross Bones Graveyard, Austin Osman Spare, the legend of
Mary Overy and an occult duel with an undead baker.

CHARLIE CHAPLIN'S LONDON 'FILMS ON FOOT' WALK
Wednesday 27 October
Meet 7pm at Lambeth North Underground Station, 110
Westminster Bridge Road; free
The Ramblers are running a Films on Foot series of walks to
celebrate London as a film location and to coincide with the
London Film Festival. All of the walks are free, open to
everyone and end at a pub. Join the Capital Walkers (30s/40s
walking group) for a 4 mile film stroll focusing on screen
legend Charlie Chaplin who was born and lived in Lambeth.
Ends at a pub near Vauxhall tube station. Learn about his
life and see where he spent his early years.

LONDON BRIDGE FREE SCHOOL OPEN MEETING

BLACK HISTORY MONTH INDEPENDENCE FAYRE

The fayre will commemorate and celebrate black cultural
heritage, including bringing together East and West Africa
as both Somalia and Nigeria celebrate their 50th year of
independence. Stalls selling African or African influenced
produce, a Black History fashion show, a drama sketch by
young people and an African inspired fashion parade.

FRIGHT BIKES FIVES: PARK LIFE!

Buried prostitutes, lost zoos, hidden rivers, failed
revolutions and wild west heroes are just some of the
features visited on this trip through a few of south
London's parks. There's the enigmatic Matrimony place, not
at all rude Newington Butts and larks in Larkhall, starts in
Southwark, ends in Lambeth - God's own country as they say
in the tourist brochures. Riders are encouraged to wear a
mask (backwards).

BOO AT BERMONDSEY SQUARE - HALLOWEEN FUN & FILMS

Visitors to the square will be treated to apple bobbing,
pumpkin carving and face painting. The Saturday morning
farmers' market will be serving up fiendish food including
hog roasts, bangers & mash and pumpkin pie from 10am. At
6.30pm Shortwave Cinema is offering a free open-air
screening of of Tim Burton's A Nightmare before Christmas.
Del'Aziz is offering a 2 for 1 deal on Halloween cocktails,
Pumpkin soup and pumpkin cookies. They will also run a
competition for the most creative fancy dress. Winners will
be rewarded with spooky prizes. Over at Woolfson & Tay there
will be face painting and 'The Gruffalo' making a special
appearance as well as a 4pm story telling session for
children.

UNVEILING OF SPIRAL MOSAIC

As the growing season comes to an end, Jay James from
Elephant & Castle-based Janet & John Mosaics has completed a
magical 18 metres of mosaic (that's as long as a bendy bus),
incorporating many pieces made by residents and local
people. There'll be live music from Martin, Jo and the band.

THE HALLOWEEN OF CROSSBONES XIII

Southwark Mysteries presents the 13th annual performance of
the legendary alternative Halloween ritual drama to honour
the spirits of Cross Bones Graveyard. This year John
Constable (aka John Crow) and his Southwark Mysteries group
are joined by Nigel of Bermondsey and Vanessa Woolf (London
Dreamtime), and Tom Baker (Bohemianauts). As ever, there's
an Altar to the Ancestors, Samhain ritual and tantric pulse,
along with visionary songs and poems. The performance ends
in a procession to Cross Bones Graveyard. NB: this is NOT a
children's event.
