BANKSIDE CHRISTINGLE SERVICE
Wednesday 5 December
5.30pm at Southwark Cathedral,  London Bridge
The annual Christingle service of readings and carols is
held on the Eve of St Nicholas Day. The service concludes
with the lighting of the Cathedral Christmas trees, and the
switch on of Borough Market's Christmas lights. Families
wishing to join in making a Christingle before the service,

MERCY SHIPS CAROL SERVICE

A special Christmas carol service to celebrate the work of
the Africa Mercy, the world's largest charity hospital ship,
in bringing hope and healing to the forgotten poor in West
Africa. There is a retiring collection for the charity.

CINDERELLA ELLA ELLA: LOCAL PANTOMIME

The Quay Players amateur dramatic group presents a fresh
take on the traditional tale of Cinderella, with a
motorbike-loving Prince and a Cinders who spends as much
time tinkering with machinery in the workshop as she does
doing housework for the Ugly Sisters. The show features a
fantastic selection of well-loved show tunes as well modern
pop songs and power ballads which will have the audience on
their feet every night.

STORYTELLING: IMAGINING THE WAY TO LIVE AND WORK

A free workshop exploring the power of stories and
storytelling to shape and influence the way we are and work.
The session will look at the rich tradition of wisdom tales
from across the world as well as working in an interpersonal
way to discover how ordinary conversations can shift
communication and relationships. This self-reflective
workshop will be of benefit at a personal level but will
also impact positively on the way we relate to each other
and the wider community. Participants should come with an
open mind as well as a favourite story or two. Places are

CAROLS IN THE CITY

A candlelit concert in the stunning surroundings of
Southwark Cathedral to raise funds for Marie Curie Cancer

Pitch and festive readings from celebrities including
Californication and Truman Show star Natascha McElhone and
BAFTA nominated actor Phil Davis.

LOWER MARSH CHRISTMAS MARKET
Friday 7 December
11am-3.30pm  at Lower Marsh; free
Designer-makers from Morley College will join retailers at a
special festive market in Waterloo. The five Morley College
stalls will offer a combination of textiles, ceramics,
jewellery and printmaking. The Morley College traders will
be joined by Waterloo retailers like Rivers' Remedies, South
Bank Cards and Assemble & Join. Community groups including
representatives from St John's Waterloo, who will sell
fairtrade products, will also be on the street. And regular
traders will add a festive flavour to their stalls during
the day. This special Christmas market is part of the
Waterloo 'Portas pilot'.

ICE CREAM AND MUSIC FLASHMOB

Italian gelateria 3BIS in Park Street is giving 50 per cent
of the day's takings to Borough Music School, a small local
charity providing musical education to Southwark children at
a subsidised price. To drum up (!) extra enthusiasm, the
children of Borough Music School will be at 3BIS in Borough
Market from 3pm-4pm. The school organising a #flashmob so
people can join in (with a tambourine, flute or just
clapping hands) to make some music, buy some ice cream and
support Borough Music School.

LEARN THE SARDANA

4pm-7pm  at St George the Martyr,  Borough High Street; free
As Catalunya shares St George with England there are plans
for the Catalan dance called the Sardana to be performed
outside St George the Martyr Church in Borough High Street
on St George's Day next year. Anyone will be able to join
in, as they do in the Spanish region, but it helps to have
had some practise. The sessions are in the crypt which is
entered from the back of the church -walk down the piazza at
the side where the great event will happen in April.
