Someone I used to teach referred to her weekly Alexander lesson as her "Alexander facelift." What has changed? The way in which we move reveals a lot about age: as we get older we stiffen our bodies and restrict our range of movement. Also, as people get older their eyes tend to get smaller and their faces get fixed. Children have big eyes and alive, elastic faces. George Orwell said "At 50, everyone has the face he deserves." My colleague Elizabeth Walker was recently interviewed on Woman's Hour because she was still working, teaching the Alexander Technique at 97. When I first met her she was 87 but looked 60. She had a youthful twinkle in here eye and she was upright not with "shoulders back", "core stability" good posture but with a lithe, poised body. The Alexander Technique gives us back an effortless, economic way of moving and being upright, and a light, responsive face. Too good to be true?
