Info & map: http://www.London-SE1.co.uk/whatson/event/16046 MARCHIONESS DISASTER 25TH ANNIVERSARY Wednesday 20 August 12.45pm at Southwark Cathedral, London Bridge To mark the 25th anniversary of the Marchioness pleasure boat disaster, those who died, as well as survivors and their families and friends, will be remembered at the cathedral's daily lunchtime Eucharist. The service will take place in the retrochoir of the cathedral and is open to everyone. Extra candle stands will be in the vicinity of the Marchioness memorial which is located by the south-west door of the cathedral, where there will also be vases where flowers brought in memory of the departed can be placed. Programme to include a selection of Japanese songs, Spem in alium by Thomas Tallis and Bob Chilcott's Nidaros Jazz Mass. Directed by their founder Keiichi Asai for over 50 years, the Kyoto Echo Choir is one of Japan's most accomplished choral ensembles. Their ongoing relationship with Bob Chilcott has brought them to the UK, where they will be taking part in the Association of British Choral Directors' 29th Convention gala concert, as well as giving this concert consisting of their special repertoire in Southwark Cathedral. Bring a picnic to share while listening to live music from Kat Sandell and her band. There will be a burger van, ice creams, a bran tub, raffle and doggy bric-a-brac. Info & map: http://www.London-SE1.co.uk/whatson/event/15579 UNVEILING OF FREDERICK WILLIAM HOLMES VC PAVING STONE Tuesday 26 August 2pm at Abbey Street (near Bermondsey Square) The Mayor of Southwark will unveil a commemorative paving stone in Abbey Street (north of Bermondsey Square and south of St Mary Magdalen Churchyard) in honour of Bermondsey-born Fred Holmes. The stone will be placed in the pavement near the site of the Abbey Street house where Holmes was born in 1891. The unveiling ceremony will feature a military parade. Holmes earned the Victoria Cross on 26 August 1914 for two acts of bravery during the Battle of Le Cateau. He received the VC at Buckingham Palace on 13 January 1915 and was driven through the streets of Bermondsey as a hero and presented with a purse of gold by the borough council. * Press cuttings and information about Fred Holmes will be on public display in the foyer of the council offices at 160 Tooley Street from Wednesday 20 to Friday 29 August.
